At Alte Kalköfen Lodge, we believe that a name holds history and character.

Our lodge is named after two iconic limestone ovens that stand as proud symbols of our heritage. Directly translated Alte Kalköfen means Old Limestone Oven. These lime ovens was used to burn limestone into lime during the early 1900’s and were mined on the farm Sandverhaar as well as the adjoining property Simplon. The owners of these ovens produced lime that was used to mix cement for building purposes.

The first oven was constructed with clay bricks during the late 1800's, presumably by a Mr. Sandberg. According to information he immigrated to the USA in 1938.
The second oven, that was a replica of the first oven, was built by a former Schutztruppe Mr. George Kottner during 1904 – 1908 on the farm Simplon. Karl Schneider then bought Simplon from Kottner and modernized the second oven to its current state in 1938.

One oven, a prominent landmark visible from the road, invites travelers to discover its story. The second oven, nestled near our historic farmhouse built in the late 1800s, whispers tales of the past.
These remarkable ovens not only define our lodge but also serve as a gathering point for visitors. They remind us of the rich history of our region and the industrious spirit of those who came before us.
